Health Insurance

For individuals and families there are (3) major health insurance options:

  • Major Medical or Affordable Care Act Plans
  • Sort-term Plans
  • Medical Indemnity Plans / Fee-For-Service Plans

Major Medical or Affordable Care Act Plans

You may know Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans as major medical, comprehensive coverage, or even “Obamacare,” but whatever you call them, these plans meet all the requirements of the ACA and are typically the most comprehensive on the market. If you have a chronic illness or face a medical emergency, these plans can help prevent staggering expenses.

ACA plans provide benefits for a broad range of health care services, both inpatient and outpatient, and can save you money on routine doctor visits, prescription drugs, preventative care, hospital stays, and more. These plans are available to almost everyone, and you can’t be denied coverage based on preexisting conditions.

ACA or Major Medical plans can be on or off Marketplace. If you apply On-Marketplace you can see if you're eligible for a Premium Tax Credit, or if you qualify for low-cost coverage through Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

You can enroll or change your existing health plans during open enrollment which runs November 1st - February 15th. Or at any point throughout the year if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Click on the Shop Marketplace plans here button on the right side the page to see if you qualify for Premium Tax Credits, and to view your available plan options and enroll into a plan.

Sort-term Plans

Short-term plans can cover your healthcare needs for renewable periods of up to 3 years and can be a great option for self-employed individuals, healthy adults, and as a solution the bridge the gap between loss of insurance and open enrollment or Medicare eligibility.

Short-term plans typically are less expensive and less comprehensive than major medical plans.

Medical Indemnity Plans / Fee-For-Service Plans

Medical indemnity plans or fee-for service plans pay you a fixed amount for services such as $50 for a doctor visit. In this example, if you visit the doctor, the plan will pay you $50, regardless of the bill for the visit.

Medical indemnity plans offer the most flexibility. There are no restrictions on where you receive care. Your benefits will be paid regardless of what doctor or facility you choose. And you don’t need to designate a primary care physician or need a referral to visit a specialist.

You can purchase medical indemnity plans as your only insurance coverage, or to supplement another insurance plan to help pay down deductibles, copays, or coinsurance.
